ZEPHR - Past Lives (LP)

“Past Lives”, the new album from ZEPHR (Denver, CO), shows the heart-on-sleeve punk trio in top form. It offers validation for anyone who is battling something, whether it be internal or external, including inherent creative contradictions. Jim Fitzpatrick’s melodic crooning is at odds with his ear-shredding guitar tone. Drummer Tyler Merkel’s approach is unfettered, yet methodical. Eamonn Martin’s bass playing bounces around the boiling point as he also delivers enthralling, yet blood-curdling vocal squalls. The end result is another brilliant statement on how anthemic and intimate can be two sides of the same coin. The band is dialed in and all the listener has to do is press play. Other things in life should be so easy.
